Netherlands – Japan Integrated Dance Collaboration “UNUM & Iungo”

UNUM

UNUM, meaning “one” in Latin, is a collaborative dance piece created by artists from the Netherlands and Japan.The process began with Iungo, a short work developed in Tokyo in January 2024. Through this piece, choreographers Adriaan Luteijn and Dai Matsuoka first connected and set out on a larger creative journey together.The theme they embraced was “parents and children performing together.” Six pairs—each consisting of a dancer and their parent or child—gathered from the Netherlands, Canada, and Japan. Through rehearsals rooted in family memories and conversations, they explored the possibilities of their own bodies and the relationships between them. As cultures, generations, and ways of being intersected, questions emerged—of closeness and distance, conflict and trust, and ultimately: What does it mean to be family?
In Japan, physical closeness between parents and children often fades as they grow older. In a culture where hugging or holding hands is not part of everyday life, what might arise when their bodies encounter each other again—through dance? “When only similar people gather, nothing happens. But when very different bodies and minds come together, friction and stimulation create something beautiful— like a chemical reaction.”
“That’s why we value stepping just beyond our limits. Only by venturing into unfamiliar territory can we discover new landscapes.” Coming from different artistic backgrounds—Luteijn from classical and modern dance, Matsuoka from butoh—their collaboration grew into one of deep trust and shared language. Though they spoke different languages and came from distinct cultures, they eventually began calling each other Kyodai—“brother.” That bond has become a foundation for this creative partnership, where contrasting aesthetics and methods resonate.
The parent–child bond is often filled with layered emotions and quiet distances. Which is why, when bodies briefly align—just for a moment—that moment feels all the more beautiful.
“If we could create a moment when many become one.” — With this hope, UNUM begins.

ラテン語で「ひとつ」を意味する「UNUM（ウヌム）」は、オランダと日本のクリエイターの共同創作によって生まれたダンス作品です。起点となったのは、2024年1月に東京で創作された「Iungo」。この短編作品を通じて出会ったエイドリアン・ルテインと松岡大は、より大きな構想へと歩みを進めます。「親と子の共演」をテーマに掲げ、異なる身体的特性をもつダンサーと、その親または子、計6組がオランダ・カナダ・日本から集い、家族の記憶や感情をもとに、自身の身体の可能性と他者との関係を探る創作が始まりました。文化や世代、身体のあり方を超えて交差する対話のなかから、親密さと距離、衝突と信頼、そして「家族とは何か」という問いが浮き彫りになっていきます。日本では親子の間に身体的な距離があることも少なくありません。抱きしめる、手をつなぐといった行為が日常的ではないなかで、ダンスを通じてあらためて身体同士が出会いなおしたとき、何が立ち上がるのか——。「同じような人ばかりが集まっても、何も起こらない。でも、まったく異なる身体や考え方を持つ人が集まると、そこに摩擦や刺激が生まれ、化学反応のように美しいものが生まれます。」「だからこそ、あえて“限界の一歩先”に踏み出すことを大切にしています。それぞれが、これまで踏み込んだことのない領域に挑戦することで、新しい景色が見えてくる。」クラシックやモダンダンスを出自とするルテインと舞踏をルーツに持つ松岡。異なる言語、文化、スタイルを持つ二人の振付家は、やがて「Kyodai（兄弟）」と呼び合うようになりました。ダンスという共通言語を通じて育まれた深い信頼関係は、異なる美意識や手法が響き合う協働を支える礎となっています。親子のあいだに流れる複雑な感情と、近くて遠い距離。だからこそ、ふと重なり合う瞬間の美しさが際立ちます。「“多”から“一”になる瞬間を生み出せたら」──この願いとともに、「UNUM」は幕を開けます。

In one word — magnificent. It made me reflect deeply on differences in age, gender, and physical abilities. 一言、素晴らしかったです。年齢の違い、性の違い、身体の違いなど様々なものを考えさせられました。

I could truly feel the love of family. Since I live alone, it made me want to express the feelings I haven’t been able to convey to my parents and siblings. 家族の愛を感じました。普段一人暮らしなので、両親、兄妹に伝えきれていない想いを伝えたいと感じました。

I was deeply moved by the way every dancer enjoyed dancing regardless of disability, age, or professional status. It reminded me that dance is something anyone can enjoy and take part in. 障がいや年齢、プロなども関係なくダンスを楽しむ姿にとても心打たれました。ダンスというものがどんな人にとっても楽しめる、出来るということを改めて感じました。

It was wonderful to see a performance featuring dancers of so many different ages, races, and hearts. Despite their differences, I was touched by the sense of shared humanity that connected them. こんなにも年代、人種、親愛、心の違いのあるダンサーを一度に見れる公演を初めて観たのでとても良かった。違いがあるのに、人間としての共通点を感じられて感動した。

It was fascinating to see family from a new perspective. I used to think dance was something difficult that required years of training, but learning that everyone was treated as a professional regardless of experience completely changed my perception and broke down my preconceptions about dance. 家族の形を新しい視点で見ることができて面白かったです。ダンスは難しいもので、スキルを磨かなければ上手に踊れないと思っていましたが、経験に関わらず、全員をプロとして接するということを知った時、自分の中でのダンスのイメージや偏見が崩されたように感じました。

The vitality moved me to tears. I was so happy to experience the atmosphere of a truly professional work — it felt healing for my heart. 生命力で、本当に涙が出ました。プロの作品の空気感を体感できすごく嬉しかった。心が救われました。

The movements of the wheelchair dancer were incredible. The overall structure and choreography were impressive, and above all, the hugging scene was breathtakingly beautiful. 車椅子のダンサーの動きが素晴らしかった。全体的な構成と動きの組み合わせ、そして何よりも、ハグするシーンがとても美しかった。

I felt like I witnessed what real dance is. The emotions of the performers came through so clearly — it was an outstanding piece. 本当のダンスを観た気がします。皆さんの気持ちがとても伝わってきて、素晴らしい作品でした。

I saw UNUM & Iungo at ROHM Theatre North Hall — it was wonderful. In Iungo, the distance and movement as eight dancers gathered and dispersed created beautiful scenes. The transitions on stage flowed gently into my mind. UNUM also unfolded multiple relationships without overly complex choreography, giving it a theatrical, artistic quality. It was a performance that made me want to dance myself. UNUM & Iungo 観た。ロームシアターノースホールにて。とても良かった……。Iungoでは、8人のダンサーが集合し離散する距離感から生まれる様々な景色が美しかった。舞台で起こる変化が優しく頭に入ってくる。UNUMも難解な振り付けがなく複数の関係性が展開されていくのが演劇の様でもあり舞台芸術を感じた。自分も踊れるようになりたいなと思える作品だった。

I attended the Kobe performance. In UNUM, dancers and their parents with diverse physical characteristics connected through heart, body, and emotion. Iungo was pictorial and beautiful — a work that evoked tenderness and affection toward others. UNUMは多様な身体的特徴を持つダンサーやその親子が心や身体と感情を通わせ合う。Iungoは絵画的で美しい。他者への愛しさが喚起される作品。

In UNUM, the use of the white folding screens was remarkably tasteful. The way the piece combined professionals and amateurs — gathered under the theme of “parent and child” — was beautifully presented through the interplay of video and the movement of the screens. It was truly captivating. UNUMは、白い二つ折り衝立の使い方がとてもセンスがよく、親子という括りで集めたプロとアマチュアの混在集団を、映像と衝立の移動の仕方で、とてもうまく見せていて、とても面白かった。
